A course entitled Towards Environmentally Friendly Artificial Intelligence: Principles and Practices of Sustainability

The quality assurance and university performance division at the Institute organizes a course entitled Towards an environmentally friendly artificial intelligence: principles and practices of sustainability.
Under the patronage of the esteemed university president and under the supervision of the esteemed dean of the institute, the quality assurance and university performance division at the institute organized, during this December, a course entitled Towards an environmentally friendly artificial intelligence: principles and practices of sustainability, and each of:
M.M. Haider Ali Mohsen, Mr. Moayed Ibrahim Mahdi, Mr. Harun Rafi Hussein, Mr. Mohammed Abdul Rahman Abdul Karim and the above division
A number of members of the Institute participated in it.
The purpose of the course:
Clarifying the concept of environmentally friendly artificial intelligence and its relationship with the principles of sustainable development, analyzing the environmental impacts associated with the development and operation of artificial intelligence systems, reviewing practices and technologies that contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency in artificial intelligence, identifying the role of green artificial intelligence in supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, proposing strategies and recommendations to promote the adoption of sustainable artificial intelligence in various institutions and sectors.
The course showed
The adoption of renewable energy in the operation of data centers and computer platforms supporting smart models.
Use more efficient models via improved algorithms and model compression techniques (pruning, quantization).
The shift towards green infrastructures and the modernization of devices to be less energy - consuming.
Conduct periodic assessment of the carbon footprint of artificial intelligence systems and transparently publish its results.
Encouraging scientific research in the field of sustainable artificial intelligence and developing international standards for measuring environmental impact.
Promote environmental awareness among technical workers, and integrate sustainability practices into academic and professional training.
The course falls within any of the Sustainable Development Goals
The topic of 'environmentally friendly artificial intelligence' falls under more than one of the Sustainable Development Goals, most notably:
Goal 7 clean and renewable energy because sustainable artificial intelligence is based on reducing energy consumption and moving towards renewable energy sources, goal 13 climate action is the most relevant, given the role of green artificial intelligence in reducing emissions and supporting the fight against climate change.
