Hawija Technical Institute organizes a panel discussion on “Disinfection side products”

Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Prof. Dr. Alia Abbas Ali Al-Attar, and the supervision of Prof. Dr. Omar Khalil Ahmed, Dean of the Institute, the Department of Water Resources Technologies organized a panel discussion on “Disinfection byproducts”

The lecture was delivered by Mr. Rawdan Abdullah Saleh Al-Tedari in the department, and it was attended by several affiliates and students.

The episode discussed the process of disinfecting drinking water using chlorine, the negative effects, and the formation of side compounds that have a bad effect on the health of the consumer.

The episode showed the reasons for the formation of carcinogenic trihalomethane compounds, the methods for their measurement, and the standard specifications specified for that.

The seminar aimed at emphasizing the importance of avoiding the formation of side compounds for disinfection with chlorine, by emphasizing the importance of the treatment stages, especially the process of fortification using alum.

The episode came out with the following recommendations:

  1. Follow up the organic load’s NOM in both the source water, the produced water, and the water carried in the drinking water networks.
  2. The concentration of NOM in (source) water, treated water, and water in drinking water networks should be monitored to ensure that the removal of organic matter NOM and turbidity is carried out effectively in treatment plants.
  3. Concentration of secondary disinfection products such as trihalomethane within the permissible limits within the standard specifications.
  4. Monitoring changes in raw water quality regarding the concentration and quality of NOM.
