Design environmentally friendly (deep eutectic) solvents for use in the chemical industry

Under the patronage of the President of Northern Technical University, the Dean of the Technical Engineering College / Mosul, Prof. Dr. Alia Abbas Al-Attar, and in cooperation with the Department of Quality Assurance and University Performance at the University, and within the framework of the Sustainable Development Activities for the academic year 2025–2026, the Quality Assurance and University Performance Division organized a training course entitled:

“Design Environmentally Friendly (Deep Eutectic) Solvents for Use in the Chemical Industry.”

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) represent sustainable and safe alternative solvents that are gaining increasing attention as substitutes for conventional solvents in industrial applications, extraction processes, and materials science. This is attributed to their unique physicochemical properties, biodegradability, and biocompatibility.

Lecturers:

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Ali Younis Hamed
  • Prof. Dr. Rafea Rashid Mohammed

Course Objective:
The course aimed to introduce the design of environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvents for application in the chemical industry:

  • As green alternatives to conventional and ionic solvents, characterized by ease of preparation and low cost.
  • Providing high efficiency and enhanced environmental sustainability compared to traditional organic solvents such as methanol and acetone.
  • Highlighting their applications in biocatalysis, organic synthesis, material separation processes, and metal recycling.
