The master’s thesis at the Technical College of Engineering – Kirkuk, presented by the student Saad Mahmoud Suleiman entitled (Using radar images and machine learning algorithms to map soil contents of silt, silt and sand in the Zab area, Mosul city, Iraq) sought to find a new way to create and predict soil content maps
The study dealt with the use of a new work mechanism to create soil content maps using Sentinel-1 radar images and laboratory test samples in addition to the digital elevation model of the Zab area in Nineveh Governorate by employing 5 algorithms in this study.
The aim of the thesis is:
1- Using (Machine learning) as a modern method to evaluate and improve prediction in the field of classifying soil components of silt, silt and sand.
2- Establishing a modern database that includes all the details required to create soil texture component maps.
3- Extracting the natural features of the study area from a modern and developed database that supports radar images.
Researcher’s results:
1- The thesis concluded that predicting soil texture using machine learning algorithms can be accurate enough and trustworthy if applied and employed correctly.
2- The (Random Forest) algorithm showed almost perfect accuracy in predicting soil texture.
3- The (decision trees) algorithm showed the best results after applying the model improvement mechanism by predicting the content of (sand, clay and silt).
4- The (Artificial Neural Network) algorithm achieved the best results in predicting the content of (Gravel) in the soil.
