Master’s thesis at the Northern Technical University discusses “Design, Simulation, Implementation and Testing of a Solar Thermal System for a Swimming Pool Using Solar Collectors”

The master’s thesis submitted by the student (Nursan Hameed Majeed) at the Technical Engineering College of Kirkuk researched “Designing simulation, implementation, and testing of a solar thermal system for a swimming pool using solar collectors.”
The thesis dealt with the following:
1- Designing a swimming pool powered by a solar heating system from the solar collector.
2- Conducting a field survey of changes related to weather conditions (atmospheric temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, and relative humidity).
3- Make calculations for the energy required to achieve the design water temperature and calculate the rate of losses
4- Determine the type and size of the solar collector that meets the energy requirements needed to heat the water inside the swimming pool.
5- Choose the type and size of the pump to ensure that the water circulates inside the basin
6- Choose the type, size, and a number of filters; That meet the water purification requirements inside the pool.
The purpose of the thesis:
First: Study, design, and implementation of a swimming pool heated by solar energy in the city of Kirkuk.
Second: The design determines the temperature of the pool water according to the type of use, as well as the size of the pool and the number of users. To find out the size of the solar collector that meets the heating requirements to achieve the pool temperature throughout the work.
Third: Determine the size and type of water pump.
Fourth: Determine the type, size, and a number of filters.
Fifth: Designing solar collectors with high efficiency and economical costs.
The research concluded:
1- The design of this type of solar collector is inexpensive and easy to manufacture, in addition to the thickness of the tubes used that helps absorb the largest possible amount of solar energy and convert it into thermal energy.
2- Use a solar collector with an area of (1.5) square meters and a flow rate of (1) liter per minute, sufficient to heat a swimming pool with a volume of (640) liters.
3- The results showed that the low flow rates contributed significantly to increasing the thermal efficiency by 0.70% in the solar collectors when the flow rate was (1) liters/minute.
4- It is noted from the tests that the highest thermal efficiency was in the month of April due to the high temperature and the lack of heat losses in this month.
5- The energy gained is directly proportional to the intensity of solar radiation and at low flow rates, as water can be stored in a thermally insulated tank and used later.
6- Thermal losses increase with the increase in the temperature difference between the pool and the ocean. The existing water temperature can be maintained
7- It is possible to maintain the temperature of the water in the solar collectors when covering them at night, as the study showed that the decrease in temperature of the swimming pool does not decrease by (4) degrees Celsius, and this is called the (threshold) temperature, as the swimming pool can be used in the morning the next day.
