Kirkuk Technical College of Engineering holds a seminar entitled “Self-cleaning concrete”

Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Prof. Dr. Alia Abbas Al-Attar, and the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Sami Rida Aslan, Dean of the Technical College of Engineering, Kirkuk, the Department of Environmental and Pollution Techniques Engineering held a seminar entitled “Self-cleaning concrete”

The seminar discussed the definition of self-cleaning catalytic concrete?

Self-cleaning concrete is produced by adding a catalyst to the concrete mixture. It is a new building material that has been developed in the past three decades. The most prominent characteristic of the concrete type is its self-cleaning ability. It not only preserves the appearance of the facade of the structure but also breaks down most of the gases emitted from automobile exhaust and those from gases emitted from rainwater. The self-cleaning property is obtained by adding an additive called a white color catalyst to the concrete.

How was self-cleaning catalytic concrete invented? This technology was invented largely by accident, by Luigi Cassar, an Italian chemist at the cement company Italcementi. He was trying to create a building material that would maintain a bright white color even in polluted conditions. He used a method called photocatalysis, which uses the sun’s energy to remove dirt. To his surprise, when the air around the cured concrete was tested, it contained up to 80 percent less nitrous oxide, and the concrete was cleaning the air as well as itself.

Advantages of self-cleaning catalytic concrete:

One of the most prominent characteristics of this type of concrete is self-cleaning. This leads to the preservation of the aesthetic appearance of the structures for a long time. The photo catalytic materials used in the production of catalytic concrete will assist in the decomposition of harmful gases such as ozone and other harmful gases produced by the gases emitted with rainwater. This is especially important in large and crowded cities. Therefore, environmental pollution will be greatly reduced and the lives of many future generations saved.
