Assistant Professor, the Vice President of NTU for Scientific Affairs, a committee member and supervisor for an MSc thesis at the College of Engineering in Kirkuk.

The thesis titled “Compound Equivalent Capacitor with Flat Plate Receiver Using Different Spacing between Reflector and Absorber” presented by Mohammed Nizar Youssef.

The study conducted an experimental research on two new models of compound equivalent collectors with a flat plate receiver measuring (0.35 x 1.35) m, covered with a layer of double transparent glass with a thickness of (4 mm), for air heating using Phase Change Material (PCM).

The thesis aimed to compare the performance of both models under the same operating conditions to explore the effectiveness and capability of the proposed models in reducing electricity consumption used for home air heating in Mosul, Iraq, using paraffin wax PCM, known for its heat retention and release properties during phase change. Tests were conducted in April and May 2023 under standard conditions for 10 hours during daylight hours.

The researcher found that an increase in air mass flow rate leads to higher receiver performance. Results indicated that the thermal efficiency of the conventional shape is greater than the folded shape by 7.6%, 13%, and 11.7% at mass flow rates of 0.0085, 0.0174, and 0.027 kg/s respectively. The highest thermal efficiencies for the folded and conventional models were 65.4% and 77.1%, respectively, at a flow rate of 0.027 kg/s. For a constant flow rate, the conventional shape outperformed the folded shape by 15.5% on April 14, 12.6% on April 27, and 11.8% on May 14. The results showed that the highest temperature variation was obtained using the folded shape compared to the conventional shape for all air flow rates. The outside air temperature for the conventional shape was always lower than the folded shape for all air flow rates. The results demonstrated that the use of PCM and the location of the receiver have a significant effect on the performance of both models. This research provides valuable insights for evaluating the performance of the compound equivalent capacitor model for Mosul, Iraq.
