The Technical Institute / Kirkuk organizes a scientific symposium within the sustainable development program entitled Securing and preserving water in sustainable development

Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Prof. Dr. Alia Abbas Ali Al-Attar, the Department of Quality Assurance and University Performance at the Presidency of the Northern Technical University, in cooperation with the Quality Assurance Division and the Department of Surveying Technologies, organized a scientific symposium entitled (Water Securing and Preserving in Sustainable Development).

The lecture was delivered by:

  • Mrs. Ghada Hassan Mohamed Fateh / teacher
  • Mr. Shaho Khurshid Nouri / Assistant Teacher

The symposium dealt with water scarcity and its concerns, the risks facing Iraq from desertification and the water crisis, and how to secure it in sustainable development.

The symposium indicated that Iraq suffers from water scarcity due to the lack of rain and the low percentage of water coming from neighboring countries because of its dependence on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and that their source is not from Iraq and they are common rivers. It also indicated that most Arab countries are in danger of a water crisis and shortage, some countries do not meet the human need for drinking water, and the per capita share does not reach 500 cubic meters annually, while there is one Arab country in which the per capita share is 1700 cubic meters annually and is considered a global ratio, namely Mauritania.

The tendency was towards ensuring water security and not over-consumption to achieve water sustainability, access to clean water, and maintaining sanitation to create an environment free of pollution. Where the concept of securing water and sanitation is constantly renewed and the environment, climate, and humans have an impact on it, the most important thing to pay attention to is not neglecting the issue of water and paying attention to the sources of water resources and moistening the soil through afforestation and increasing green spaces to reduce temperatures.

The symposium aimed to explain the importance of water, the risks arising from the water crisis, ways to reduce the crisis, and how to secure water in light of sustainable development.

The seminar came out with the most important conclusions:

The need to pay attention to water resources and strengthen the relationship with neighboring countries, because a large percentage of water sources in Iraq come from other countries and are considered shared waters. Therefore, it requires changing the adopted policies and following international regulations and laws, as well as building dams and maintaining their dams to harvest and store river water to increase the quantities of groundwater and surface water. Securing water for future generations.
