2025-02-11Within the framework of the Northern Technical University’s commitment to promoting the concepts of sustainable development in higher education, the university, under the patronage of its President, Professor Dr. Alia Abbas Ali Al-Attar, organized a specialized workshop entitled “Requirements of Sustainable Development in Higher Education.”

The workshop aimed to discuss both global and local trends in this field.
It focused on analyzing and detailing the key dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their requirements in higher education by addressing a set of core topics, including:
1. Integrating Sustainable Development Goals into Higher Education:
The workshop reviewed strategies for integrating environmental, social, and economic dimensions into curricula and academic programs, as well as ways to implement these strategies within academic institutions to promote sustainable education.
2. Global Sustainability Rankings:
The analysis covered major global rankings that assess educational institutions’ commitment to sustainability concepts, such as the QS Sustainability Ranking, Green Metric Ranking, and the UK’s THE Impact Ranking. Discussions focused on how to improve universities’ standings in these rankings through standards related to scientific research, governance, and environmental practices.
3. The Role of Scientific Research in Achieving Sustainable Development:
The workshop highlighted the importance of directing scientific research towards sustainability issues and developing research areas that contribute to innovative solutions for environmental and social challenges. It also emphasized the need to support research projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
4. Strategies for Improving University Rankings Locally and Internationally:
Discussions explored how to enhance the university’s academic ranking in global sustainability indicators through the development of quality management systems, improvement of sustainable infrastructure, and strengthening cooperation with international academic and research institutions that share common interests in this field.
5. Challenges and Opportunities in Implementing Sustainability Practices:
The workshop addressed the challenges academic institutions face in integrating sustainability concepts into their academic and administrative policies. It also reviewed available opportunities to leverage local and international partnerships to achieve a lasting sustainable impact.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants reaffirmed the importance of adhering to the Northern Technical University’s strategic vision, under the wise leadership of Professor Dr. Alia Abbas Ali Al-Attar, towards becoming a “Green and Sustainable University.”
This commitment applies to all academic and administrative units of the university, contributing to the improvement of its global ranking and enhancing its role as a key force in implementing the principles of sustainable development in higher education.
