Master’s thesis at the Northern Technical University discusses “extracting water from the atmosphere of arid regions”

The master’s thesis at the Technical Engineering College of Kirkuk, submitted by the student, Khadija Omar Mohiuddin, researched “Water Extraction from the Atmosphere of Arid Regions.”
The letter dealt with the following:
Design and construction of a solar collector in the form of a prismatic pyramid with four sides of the glass plate. The height of the complex is (140 cm), the thickness of the insulation layer for the base of the pyramid is (15 cm), and the dimensions of the base of the pyramid are (100 cm x 100 cm). The sides of the two pyramids shall be covered with 5 cm thick glass. There are five shelves inside the pyramid, the vertical distance between each shelf is approximately (20 cm), and the thickness of the base of the shelves in each pyramid unit is (10 cm).
The compound works with calcium chloride (CaCl2) as a moisture absorbent and sawdust and cloth as an additive. During the night, moisture is absorbed from the air. During the daytime, the absorbed water is evaporated by solar energy, and the evaporated water is condensed on the sides of the solar collector.
The purpose of the message:

  1. Studying the performance and efficiency of the hierarchical multi-shelf solar system used to extract water from atmospheric air.
  2. Studying and enhancing the effects of various factors that affect the efficiency of complexes used in extracting water from the atmosphere.
  3. Calculate the daily amount of water extracted from the atmospheric air.
  4. Calculate the amount of moisture-absorbent material (desiccant) for each of the shelves in the device.
    The researcher found:
  5. The daily amount of water produced from moist air is approx
    (1.25L/hr/m2)
  6. The highest water productivity is in the month of August when it reaches (0.3L/hr), followed by July, when it reaches (0.25L/hr), and the lowest productivity is in June when it reaches (0.23L/hr).
  7. The relationship between system efficiency and productivity is direct. As productivity increases, system efficiency increases, and vice versa.
  8. The glass pyramid containing cloth has higher efficiency compared to the glass pyramid containing sawdust. This is because the amount of solution absorbed at the beginning of the experimental work is greater than that in the rack containing sawdust.
The discussion committee consisted of the following gentlemen:
  9. Prof. Dr. Omar Khalil Ahmed, Chairman
  10. Assistant Professor Dr. Raed Rashad Jassim, member
  11. Assistant Professor Ahmed Mustafa Selim, member
  12. Assistant Professor Dr. Suad Hassan Danuk, member and first supervisor
  13. The teacher, Dr. Hussein Haider Muhammad Ali, member, and the second supervisor
