Diploma Research at the Northern Technical University Discusses the Role of the 5S Methodology in Reducing Work Routine

The Administrative Technical College / Mosul hosted the discussion of a Higher Diploma research project in the specialization of Business Management Technologies, submitted by the student Moayad Raed Shareef, entitled:
“Using the 5S Methodology in Reducing Work Routine: A Survey Study in Selected Formations of the Northern Technical University.”

The research aims to examine the role of the 5S methodology in minimizing administrative routine within selected formations of the Northern Technical University. The study addressed 5S as an independent variable represented by its five dimensions:

  1. Sort

  2. Set in Order

  3. Shine

  4. Standardize

  5. Sustain

Meanwhile, work routine was treated as the dependent variable.

The research problem was based on key questions, including:

  • What is the nature of the relationship between the 5S methodology and work routine?

  • Do the five dimensions of 5S vary in their significance and impact on work routine within the university formations?

The study adopted the descriptive–analytical approach, utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed to 109 respondents from various university formations. Data were analyzed using a set of statistical methods through the SPSS V.28 statistical software package.

The findings indicated a significant correlation between the application of the 5S methodology and the reduction of work routine. This suggests that greater adherence to 5S principles within the university contributes to lower levels of routine and improved work efficiency. The results also showed varying degrees of influence among the 5S dimensions, particularly Standardize and Sustain.

In light of these findings, the researcher proposed several recommendations, the most notable of which was the introduction of motivational activities—such as job rotation and creativity workshops—to increase engagement and reduce routine among work teams. Additional recommendations included promoting 5S awareness and enhancing the work environment in line with organizational efficiency principles.

The discussion committee consisted of:

  1. Asst. Prof. Dr. Wijdan Hassan Hammoudi – Chair

  2. Asst. Prof. Dr. Heba Mohammed Hussein – Member

  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Shahla Salim Khalil – Member and Supervisor
