Program to Reduce the Use of Paper and Plastic on Campus
In pursuit of its institutional sustainability goals and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 and 13, Northern Technical University (NTU) has developed a comprehensive and multi-tiered strategy to minimize the use of paper and plastic throughout its academic, administrative, and operational activities.
This strategy integrates digital transformation, responsible resource management, and community engagement, forming the foundation of NTU’s vision for a sustainable, environmentally conscious campus.
The following programs collectively represent NTU’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and promoting a culture of sustainability.
1. Digital Transformation and Paperless Campus Initiative
Northern Technical University has adopted a digital-first approach by replacing traditional paper-based systems with electronic workflows. Academic, administrative, and financial processes are managed
through cloud platforms and e-signature systems, supporting operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
2. Smart Printing and Paper Reuse Policy
All campus printing systems are configured for responsible use, including duplex and grayscale settings. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to limit printing to essential documents and reuse printed materials where possible. Departments maintain electronic archives to minimize physical storage.
3. Electronic Learning and Assessment Systems
Northern Technical University utilizes advanced online learning platforms to conduct courses, assessments, and submissions electronically. This approach reduces the dependence on printed materials and enhances accessibility for students and faculty members.
4. Digital Communication and E-Administration
Official communication, notices, and reports are issued exclusively through digital channels such as emails, mobile applications, and the internal intranet portal, eliminating the need for printed circulars or paper-based correspondence.
5. “Reduce & Reuse Plastic” Campus Campaign
Northern Technical University has launched an ongoing campaign that promotes the reduction and reuse of plastic across all university facilities. Single-use plastic products have been replaced by eco-friendly, biodegradable, or reusable alternatives to support sustainable consumption.
6. Green Procurement and Sustainable Supply Chain Policy
Procurement processes prioritize environmentally responsible suppliers and materials. Contracts and tenders include sustainability criteria, ensuring that goods and services support NTU’s waste reduction objectives and sustainability vision.
7. Sustainable Dining and Eco-Cafeteria Program
Campus cafeterias promote sustainability through the use of reusable containers and compostable packaging. Students and staff are encouraged to bring personal cups or bottles, reducing single-use waste and supporting long-term behavioral change.
8. Waste Segregation and Recycling Infrastructure
Recycling stations and color-coded bins are strategically placed across the university to facilitate waste separation. This system enables the proper collection and recycling of paper, plastic, and organic materials in collaboration with local environmental partners.
9. Awareness, Education, and Behavioral Change Programs
Northern Technical University regularly organizes awareness campaigns, workshops, and sustainability-themed events to educate the university community about responsible consumption, waste reduction, and the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
10. Green Ambassadors Program
The Green Ambassadors Program empowers selected students to act as sustainability advocates. They assist in implementing environmental initiatives, monitoring resource use, and promoting eco-friendly behavior among peers.
11. Monitoring and Continuous Improvement System
A continuous monitoring system evaluates the performance of paper and plastic reduction initiatives. Regular sustainability reports document progress, identify challenges, and recommend areas for further improvement.
12. Sustainable Event Management Guidelines
All university events, conferences, and workshops are required to follow green event protocols. These include minimizing printed materials, avoiding plastic decorations, and ensuring waste is collected and recycled appropriately.13. Collaboration and Partnership for Sustainability
Northern Technical University collaborates with governmental agencies, NGOs, and local industries to share best practices, promote environmental education, and implement joint sustainability projects that extend beyond campus boundaries.
14. Innovation and Research for Waste Reduction
Faculty and students are encouraged to engage in research and innovation focused on sustainable materials, waste minimization technologies, and the development of biodegradable alternatives to plastic and paper products.
• Finally, The Northern Technical University Established the First Network Operations Center (NOC) Among Iraqi Universities to Support Digital Transformation.
The University’s Computer Center led the establishment of this vital facility, which will oversee the management and operation of the university’s networks across its three governorates. The center aims to ensure the efficiency and continuity of technological services while enhancing information security. It will also collaborate closely with the University Data Center to enable advanced infrastructure management and support the digital transformation of academic and administrative operations.
Professor Dr. Al-Attar, President of the University, emphasized in her statement that the National Network Operations Center is a fundamental pillar of the university’s strategy to achieve digital transformation and develop advanced technological systems. She noted that the center will enhance the efficiency of technical systems, provide technical and training support to employees, and strengthen the university’s role as a leading educational institution. The establishment of the National Network Operations Center reflects the university’s response to global developments in information technology and aims to provide a modern technological environment that supports the university’s journey towards academic and administrative excellence.
The Director of the Computer Center confirmed that the National Network Operations Center works closely with the University Data Center to provide an integrated platform for managing networks and digital services. She added that the center will ensure effective communication between the university’s branches and enhance the continuity of technical operations with high efficiency and quality.
The National Operations Center represents an important addition to the Northern Technical University’s digital infrastructure, strengthening its leadership position in higher education by adopting the latest technological innovations and providing advanced educational and administrative services.
