Strategic Assessment of Research Synergy
Strategic Assessment of Research Synergy
At Northern Technical University (NTU), we operate under the foundational belief that modern scientific breakthroughs occur at the intersection of traditional fields. To move beyond the standard metric of multidisciplinary citations, the Technical Center of Research (TCR) and the Global Rankings Monitoring Unit have pioneered an evaluation matrix that prioritizes “Practical Convergence.” This framework ensures that our research is not only academically rigorous but also possesses a high Applied Technical Readiness (ATR) level, transitioning from theoretical models into industrial solutions for Iraq and the wider region.
Our success is measured across four sophisticated dimensions:
Pre-Execution Integration & Ethical Vetting: Before any high-level postgraduate or faculty project is approved, it undergoes a multi-layered screening process. The Research Ethics Committee, in coordination with the TCR, evaluates the “Disciplinary Distance” of the work for example, merging Artificial Intelligence with Health Sciences or Renewable Energy with Agricultural Engineering. We prioritize projects that demonstrate a clear methodological integration, ensuring that protocols are designed from day one to be interdisciplinary.
Global Benchmarking & Bibliometric Intelligence: NTU leverages advanced data analytics to monitor our standing within the Times Higher Education (THE) and QS World University Rankings. We do not merely track volume; we analyze the “Interdisciplinary Impact” of our publications. By focusing on the Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) and maintaining high standards in specialized fields like Petroleum and Medical Technology, we ensure our research trajectory aligns with international excellence.
To institutionalize interdisciplinary synergy, the University has implemented a dual-metric system: the Joint Supervision Index (JSI) and the Joint Publication Index (JPI). These indices are designed to quantify the transition from isolated academic silos to a collaborative research ecosystem. Specifically, the JSI tracks postgraduate research that bridges distinct domains such as the fusion of Engineering with Clinical Health Sciences to drive medical innovation, or the alignment of Engineering Systems with Administrative Governance for enhanced operational efficiency. By leveraging our Institutional Publication Portal, we provide a real-time, data-driven assessment of how these cross-sectoral collaborations contribute to our global research impact and academic standing. We apply the same principle to the Joint supervision and publication Index applied only for institutional collaboration and use our Publication Portal to calculate both indices.
Sustainability & SDG Impact Audit: As a recognized leader in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, NTU explicitly maps its research outputs to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our internal audit system tracks the percentage of research that addresses critical nexus points, such as SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), ensuring our scientific contributions support a low-carbon, sustainable economy.
