Haweeja Technical Institute organizes an electronic workshop on (tapeworms that infect humans)

Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Prof. Dr. Alia Abbas Al-Attar, and with the follow-up of Prof. Omar Khaleel Ahmad, Dean of the Institute, the Department of Medical Laboratory Technologies organized an electronic workshop and through the “Meet” application on (types of tapeworms that infect humans) delivered by the teacher, Fadeela Salman Azeez. A number of the institute’s employees attended.

The workshop dealt with:

  • Types of worms: tapeworm, trypanosome, and nematode.
  • Tapeworms and their types: such as bovine and pig tapeworms.
  • Dwarf tapeworm.
  • Canine tapeworm (hydatid cyst disease).
  • Disease signs – Diagnostic methods – Treatment and prevention.

The workshop indicated that the most important symptoms of the disease are abdominal pain, general weakness, weight loss, and severe nervousness in the patient.

The method of transmission of infection is:

Eating meat infected with the gastric phase without proper cooking.

The workshop aimed to demonstrate the importance of cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and the necessity of not using human waste for composting and examining meat well. Executing the infected person helps to reduce the spread of tapeworms.

The workshop came out with the following recommendations:

  1. Keep your hands clean, wash them frequently with soap and water, and dry them carefully.
  2. Follow good food hygiene procedures, by washing and cooking it well, especially meat, and avoiding eating raw or undercooked fruits and vegetables without washing them with clean water first.
  3. Keeping the kitchen clean and sterilized.
  4. Be sure to freeze meat and fish for 7 days before eating them, as this period is sufficient to kill tapeworm eggs and larvae.
  5. The necessity of cooking red meat well at a temperature of 145 degrees, as well as cooking poultry such as chicken and turkey at a temperature of 165 degrees.
  6. Use separate cutting boards for meat and vegetables.
  7. If you are outside the house, drink only mineral water, especially if you are not sure of the cleanliness of the water.
