Comprehensive Promotion, Recognition & Incentive Systems for ISR at Northern Technical University

Northern Technical University (NTU) has established a multi-dimensional ecosystem designed to catalyze Interdisciplinary Scientific Research (ISR). Our framework moves beyond simple recognition to active “Institutionalized Incentivization,” ensuring that cross-disciplinary excellence is the primary driver for career advancement and financial reward.
  1. Integrated Academic Promotion Criteria (Tenure-Equivalent)
In alignment with Promotions of the Ministry of Iraqi Higher Education and Scientific Research, No. 167, 2017, NTU has formalized the following ISR-specific promotion metrics:
    • High-Impact Weighting: Interdisciplinary publications in Q1/Q2 indexed journals (Scopus/Clarivate) are granted “Distinguished Research” status. Faculty members with high Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) in interdisciplinary themes are prioritized for senior academic ranks.
    • Applied Technical Outputs: As a technical institution, NTU uniquely equates Interdisciplinary Patents and industrial prototypes with high-tier theoretical publications, rewarding researchers who bridge engineering with applied sciences.
  2.  Tiered Financial & Resource Incentives (The NTU Multiplier)
NTU provides a robust financial safety net for ISR teams through its Scientific Research Incentive Bylaw (2024):
    • Direct Financial Bonuses: A tiered multiplier system is applied to publication rewards:
o 15% Bonus: For research involving two different technical faculties.
o 30% Premium Bonus: For “Triple-Bridge” research (e.g., Engineering + Health Tech + Management) that aligns with Iraq Vision 2030.
    • Resource Allocation: High-impact ISR projects are granted “Protected Research Time” and priority access to the university’s Central Research Labs, reducing administrative loads for lead innovators.
3. Global Partnerships & Research Exchange
To prevent academic isolation, NTU incentivizes international ISR collaboration:
• Joint Funding: The university co-funds projects conducted with international partners, specifically those targeting UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• Mobility Support: Faculty members presenting interdisciplinary findings at high-ranking international conferences receive full travel grants and registration coverage.
4. Knowledge Transfer & Industry Synergy
NTU bridges the gap between lab and market through a specialized Technology Transfer Office (TTO):
• Industry-Linked Promotion: Applied research conducted in partnership with the private sector or government bodies is officially credited in the promotion dossier.
• Intellectual Property (IP) Support: The university provides free legal and technical consultations for faculty to transform interdisciplinary outputs into Marketable Patents.
5. The “NTU Excellence Award” for Scientific Integration
Annually, the University Presidency hosts the “Grand Prize for Interdisciplinary Excellence.” This award honors researchers who achieve outstanding success in scientific integration, providing:
• Significant monetary grants.
• The “Excellence Shield” for Scientific Leadership.
• Competitive seed funding for the next phase of their ISR project.
