A joint research team between the Northern Technical University and the University of Technology obtains a patent

A joint research team from the Northern Technical University and the University of Technology obtains a patent on (improving the corrosion resistance and bioactivity of the medical alloy cobalt-chromium-molybdenum by adding nanoparticles of yttria-stabilized zirconia in Rinker’s solution) due to the increasing use of an alloy based on cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) in medical applications such as prosthetics such as artificial knee joints and manufacture of shoulder bone replacements, supporting structures for heart valves, and bone fracture stabilization and bracing supplies. The alloy has also been used in industrial applications such as bearings, engine components, and turbines. This study was devoted to the fabrication of this base alloy and composite materials from the base alloy (CoCrMo) reinforced with nanoparticles of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with different weight ratios and by powder metallurgy method. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the base alloy (CoCrMo) was greatly improved when a few percentages of nanoparticles (YSZ) were added, respectively, in Rinker’s solution. The addition of these particles also improved the antibacterial activity of the alloy against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

The team consisted of

  1. Assistant Professor Dr. Jawdat Ali Yaqoub….. Northern Technical University
  2. Professor Dr. Mona Khudair Abbas ……. University of Technology
