Waste Management Policy

Waste Management Policy for Northern Technical University

Introduction
Northern Technical University (NTU) is committed to enhancing its sustainability efforts as part of its broader mission to foster a sustainable campus environment. Effective waste management is critical to sustainable development, and this policy outlines fundamental actions to manage waste produced by the university’s facilities. It requires the engagement of both staff and students to achieve a waste-free campus.
-Fundamental One: Waste Recycling
Increased Recycling Infrastructure:
NTU will expand the number of recycling bins across campus to facilitate efficient waste segregation. Bins will be clearly labeled for different types of recyclables, including paper, plastics, metals, and organics.
Awareness and Education:
The university will implement awareness programs for both staff and students to highlight the significance of waste recycling. Workshops, seminars, and informational campaigns will promote understanding of recycling processes and benefits.
Incentivizing Waste-Free Departments:
Departments that achieve waste-free status will be recognized and rewarded through incentives such as recognition programs or resources for sustainability initiatives.
Recycling Partnerships:
NTU will establish agreements with nearby recycling facilities to ensure that the waste generated on campus is effectively processed and recycled.
-Fundamental Two: Paper Use Reduction
Reducing Document Size and print on two sides:
Official letters and documents will be printed on A5 paper instead of A4, cutting paper usage in half.
Transition to Paper-Free Operations by 2025:
NTU aims to become paper-free for all formal and informal communications by 2025, including archives, adopting digital alternatives where possible.
Utilizing Eco-Friendly Paper:
When paper is necessary, the university will use eco-friendly options, such as recycled paper or paper that is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, reducing the carbon footprint associated with paper production.
-Fundamental Three: Plastic Use Reduction and Composting
Plastic Elimination:
The university will work toward eliminating the use of plastic materials in all campus facilities, promoting sustainable alternatives.
Recycled Paper Bags:
Where applicable, NTU will encourage the use of recycled paper bags instead of plastic bags in all dining and retail locations on campus.
Food Waste Composting:
Organic waste will be collected and processed into compost, which will then be used as fertilizer for green spaces within the campus to promote biodiversity and support local ecosystems.
-Fundamental Four: Research in Waste Management
Promoting Research Activities:
NTU will increase the number of research projects and publications focusing on waste recycling and sustainable practices.
Collaboration with Local Authorities:
The university will collaborate with local government agencies to conduct scientific studies aimed at addressing and solving waste management issues within the surrounding areas, including the wider community of Nineveh province.
