Northern Technical University's Commitment to Climate Action for a Sustainable Future

Introduction:

Taking action on climate change is an urgent global imperative and a central component of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13: Climate Action. Northern Technical University in Iraq is deeply committed to advancing this goal by promoting awareness, sustainable practices, and climate-resilient solutions both on and off campus. These initiatives reflect the university’s dedication to fostering a more sustainable, climate-resilient, and environmentally responsible future for all.

Total electricity usage at Northern Technical University (NTU) during the year in (kWh)
At Northern Technical University campuses, electricity plays a vital role in supporting various operations, including lighting, cooling, heating, and operating laboratory equipment. The analysis reveals trends in demand for electrical energy throughout 2019, showing a clear linear increase in electricity consumption. With the emergence of Covid-19 and the suspension of work as directed by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the rate of electricity consumption decreased significantly, as shown in the figure below. At the beginning of 2021, universities began to return to work and students began to enroll. The table also shows an increase in energy consumption rates, but the Northern Technical University began using rationalization and awareness campaigns to reduce energy consumption and began using alternative energies, starting with solar energy and then wind energy. This actually led to a decrease in consumption rates and increased reliance on alternative energies, despite the increase in student enrollment numbers and the increased use of laboratories and classrooms.

Northern Technical University Climate Action plan
Climate change is recognized as one of the most significant challenges facing our planet today. It not only impacts the environment but also reduces productivity, posing a serious threat to the economy. Without decisive action, climate change could push an estimated 100 million people into poverty by 2030. In response to this urgent issue, Northern Technical University (NTU) is committed to implementing strategies and programs aimed at mitigating climate change and fostering sustainability.
Goals for the Upcoming Period
  • Curriculum Integration: Prepare to integrate programs focused on energy conversion and management into the educational curriculum within NTU and partner institutions. This will ensure that future professionals are well-equipped to address energy-related challenges.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Organize training sessions for academic staff and experts in energy-efficient building construction practices. This will enhance their knowledge and skills in utilizing sustainable energy solutions effectively.
  • Research Promotion: Encourage and support scientific research in the fields of energy efficiency and sustainable building practices. This includes fostering collaboration between academic departments and industry partners.
  • Sustainable Building Practices: Provide consultancy support for the design and construction of sustainable buildings, thereby promoting environmentally friendly architectural practices on campus and in the community.
  • Innovative Funding Solutions: Advocate for innovative funding mechanisms to support projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and transitioning to sustainable energy consumption. This can include collaborations with governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • Efficient Technologies: Implement the use of energy-efficient technologies, processes, and devices throughout the university. Initiatives may include the installation of LED lighting, renewable energy sources, and solar-powered air conditioning systems.
NTU is also committed to organizing workshops to raise awareness about sustainable energy practices. For instance, the Renewable energy and HVAC engineering Departments have initiated workshops on utilizing alternative fuels to replace conventional fuels and help reduce pollution levels.
As a proactive educational institution, Northern Technical University aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming. By focusing on reducing electricity demand and other carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions sources, NTU is taking significant steps towards a sustainable future and a healthier planet.

Commitment to Carbon Neutral University
Climate change poses increasing challenges for energy, water resources, and supply. In response to these challenges, Northern Technical University has implemented a policy that mandates both staff and students to actively participate in efforts to conserve electricity and water. The university approaches water conservation from four interconnected and efficient dimensions while promoting responsible electricity consumption.
  •  Energy Efficiency: Policies should encourage the use of energy-efficient building materials, designs, and technologies to reduce energy consumption during both the construction and operational phases of campus facilities.
  • Sustainable Materials: The university promotes the use of sustainable and eco-friendly building materials with a lower environmental impact, such as recycled materials and renewable resources, in all construction and renovation projects.
  • Water Conservation: The university implements policies that require the installation of water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems, and landscaping practices that minimize overall water usage across campus.
  • Waste Reduction: Northern Technical University encourages construction practices that minimize waste generation and promotes the recycling and reuse of construction materials to foster a circular economy on campus.
  • Indoor Air Quality: Ensuring that university buildings provide a healthy indoor environment is a priority. This includes proper ventilation systems, the use of low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) materials, and effective pollutant control measures.
  • Site Selection: The university promotes responsible site selection for new developments, aiming to minimize environmental disruption and preserve natural habitats within and around the campus.
Northern Technical University (NTU) is taking significant steps to transition its energy sources from fossil fuels to renewable energy through a comprehensive three-step plan aimed at achieving 100% green energy and zero emissions.
