Hawija Polytechnic College organized a seminar on (Occupational Safety in Scientific Laboratories).

Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Professor Dr. Alia Abbas Al-Attar, and under the follow-up of the Dean of Hawija Polytechnic College, Professor Dr. Omar Khalil Ahmed, the Dean of the College.

The Civil Defense Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Mechanical Techniques and the Quality Assurance and University Performance Division, organized a seminar on (Occupational Safety in Scientific Laboratories).

The lecturers were:

  • Assistant Lecturer Ziad Khalaf Hamad

  • Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Abd Khalaf

  • Mr. Ali Hassan Ahmed

It was attended by a number of the college’s staff and students.

The seminar addressed:

The concept of occupational safety and its importance in scientific laboratories, and the identification of potential risks that laboratory workers may be exposed to, such as chemical, biological, and physical risks, in addition to clarifying safe methods for dealing with chemicals and laboratory equipment, and stating the preventive measures that must be followed to reduce accidents and injuries inside the laboratory.

The seminar demonstrated:

The importance of adhering to occupational safety instructions and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, coats, and protective goggles, as well as the importance of knowing proper storage methods for chemicals and the correct handling of laboratory waste, in addition to educating participants on first aid procedures and emergency plans in the event of accidents inside the laboratory.

The seminar aimed to:

Spread the culture of occupational safety among workers and students in scientific laboratories, and enhance awareness of potential risks and ways to prevent them, in addition to developing the skills of workers in applying safety procedures and proper handling of laboratory equipment and materials to ensure a safe working environment.

The seminar concluded with the following recommendations:

  1. The necessity of adhering to occupational safety instructions and rules inside scientific laboratories.

  2. Providing personal protective equipment (PPE) for all workers and students in the laboratories.

  3. Organizing continuous training courses on occupational safety and emergency procedures.

  4. Ensuring periodic maintenance of laboratory equipment and tools.

  5. Placing instructional signs and safety instructions inside the laboratories clearly.
