The Future of Manufacturing: A Focus on Sustainability

Under the distinguished auspices of Prof. Dr. Alia’a al-Attar, President of NTU, and the supervision of Dr. Abdul Nasser Kashmola, Dean of Mosul Technical Institute, a collaborative scientific seminar focused on advancing sustainable development was presented by the Department of Mechanical Techniques at Mosul Technical Institute, in partnership with the university’s Quality Assurance and Performance Department and the institute’s Quality Assurance Division.

The seminar’s topic was “Sustainable Manufacturing and Its Vital Role in the Future.” The goal was to explain what sustainable manufacturing is and why it’s important for reaching the university’s sustainable development goals.

The seminar was presented by:

During the seminar, they talked about:

  • What sustainable development and sustainable manufacturing mean in general.
  • The main ideas behind sustainable manufacturing, which include taking care of the environment, the economy, and society.
  • Why more and more companies are choosing to use sustainable manufacturing and what they hope to achieve by doing so.
  • The problems that can make sustainable manufacturing difficult and how we can overcome them to reach goals like less waste and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Real-life examples of sustainable manufacturing, including how companies like Toyota and Apple have used it in their factories.

The seminar aimed to:

  1. Show why sustainability and sustainable manufacturing are important and why everyone should support and use them.
  2. Prove that sustainable manufacturing isn’t just a theory; there are actual examples of businesses that have benefited from it.
  3. Explain how sustainable manufacturing can lower costs by using clean energy and reducing waste with modern technology like 3D printing.
  4. Highlight the economic benefits of sustainable manufacturing, as customers and investors increasingly prefer sustainable products, giving companies a competitive edge.

The seminar also made the following suggestions:

  1. The government should support sustainable manufacturing by creating helpful laws for manufacturers, keeping economic factors in mind, and investing in the necessary infrastructure.
  2. More seminars and workshops should be organized for people in the manufacturing industry to explain the importance of sustainable manufacturing and encourage them to adopt it.
  3. Specialized workshops and seminars should be held to discuss the challenges of sustainable manufacturing and work on finding solutions.
